George Washington's Mount Vernon estate is located eight miles south of River Towers. This National Historic Landmark is now a museum, where visitors can explore his home, the estate's grounds, garden, and grist mill. Today Mt. Vernon hosts a variety of events, including archaeology in action tours, whiskey tastings and dinner, a colonial market and fair, and a wine tasting and sunset tour.
River Farms, which was one of Washington's five farms, is now home to the American Horticultural Society. Visitors can explore the farm's 25 acres of lawns and garden. The farm hosts an annual spring garden market where flower and vegetable plants are sold by a variety of stores and organizations.
